Belgian Best Shotguns By Chuck Hawks Let's start by reviewing the definition of 'best gun': As used here, best gun means a double-barreled shotgun of the highest quality. One of those few shotguns intended to compete in the marketplace primarily on the basis of quality, design, workmanship and finish rather than just price. A best gun is intended to be competitive with the best that any other shop can build.

Most best guns are decorated with engraving, fine line hand checkering, etc. And they are usually available with different levels of adornment.

Best guns are typically bespoke guns, or are at least available as bespoke guns. Liege, Belgium has been a gunmaking center for centuries. The Liege proof house was established in and it is the oldest European proof house still in operation. Today Belgian made guns have a deservedly high reputation, but this was not always the case. From the late 's through the decade immediately following the Great War W.

Iin addition to best guns, a great number of relatively low grade guns and also double gun barrels were manufactured in Belgium. This was much the same situation as occurred with Spanish guns in the decades immediately following W.

Belgian twist barrels, especially, were viewed with suspicion, sometimes with good reason. Byreliable Damascus shotgun barrels were readily available, and bydouble-barrel flintlock shotguns were available. During that time, Joseph. And so the relationship between the Brownings and Fabrique Nationale in Herstal, a suburb of Liege, Belgium, was established. The first of the. Only lessor quality American guns were made in Belgium or supplied with Belgian barrels and large numbers of cheaply made private label house brand shotguns were imported from Belgium.

In the 's this situation slowly improved. I think that, for American shooters, the introduction of the Browning Superposed shotgun Bthe last gun design of the great John Browning before he died inwas the turning point.

The Superposed was introduced in and to this day it is produced by the arms making giant Fabrique Nationale FN in Belgium. It worked as intended and no one could reasonably question the quality of materials or workmanship employed in its manufacture.

The Superposed was produced in 12, 20, 28 and. There were Field, Magnum, Trap, and Skeet versions. It has an "E" in a diamond stamp on side of breech It has 25" barrels It has the brass front bead sight and doesn't look like it It is in mint shape with no corrosion or scratches and the petina on both the steel and woods is fabulous Does it have damascus barrels laminated steel?

I have attached a pic of the gun as well as of the "E" marking. Thanks for the help. Last edited: Sep 23, Sep 23, 2. Joined: Dec 6, Messages: 6, Are you sure they are Damascus and not perhaps fake Damascus made by etching a spiral pattern on solid steel barrels for those who liked the look of Damascus? Laminated steel is just another form of Damascus, made without the initial twisting of the rods. It is no stronger than any other built-up barrel. It is not "mint" if it has patina, and it does not look mint, though it appears to have been well maintained.

Browning Owners. FN Liege or B26? Hello, I am Silvana from Argentina. The serial numbers I have seen are with L13 prefix instead of LB3, markings for the manufacturer are like the ones on FN pistols, but serial number is more like browning manufacture, any ideas of where this number came from??

Thanks in advance. I am a little on the fence, here. The serial number 13XX indicates a 1st year Superposed However, the serial number system was changed over in from a sequential numeric type, to a alpha system of dating the number at the end refers to the number of production per each particular year. That being said, the code of "RN" would indicate a production number. If I am correct, I believe the Superposed was only produced between As far as it being a Leige, the Leige was marked with a two digit year code, followed by the letter J.

The three years of production appear to be as follows. It does not appear that your gun is a Leige, by this serial number. Is there any way that you could post up some pictures of it? If you can, try to post a close up of the serial number, too you can cover the last two digits with a piece of tape.

Rob postonAug 2, One of the problems dating guns that were sold internationally is that the serial numbering system may be different than that used on Browning imports.

For the Auto-5 I know it is after Not too sure about the Superposed, but I'd be careful trying to apply Browning data to FN distributed guns. Also, although the Superposed is out of regular production, it has always been available as a special order item.

Prices will make your jaw drop. I believe the best thing Miss Silvana can do is to contact FN. Rudolph31Aug 3, Rob poston likes this.
